Harefield Care Ltd
The site is currently occupied by Harefield Place, which comprises a fourstorey early 19 th century historic house and a three storeyextension built in the early 1980’s. The original house was also substantially rebuilt and altered when the extension was built. The building is set in about 8 acres of landcaped grounds. The project location is located within theMetropolitan Green Belt and the Colne Valley Regional Park.

The initial concept design, consisting of schematic site andfloor plans, sections and block elevations, was developed after the initialsite inspection which included an assessment of the site constraints, sitecontours, adjoining properties, and the immediate environment. The site constraints data and concept design continued to bedeveloped as additional information became available, including the tree surveyand highways analysis.

The proposed new annex building is designed as a threestorey quadrangle building formed around an inner courtyard.

Careful use of site grades and restricting the building tothree storeys keeps the overall height of the building significantly lower thanthe listed building.  This subservienceis further emphasised by the extensive use of a mansard roof to house the firstfloor accommodation.

The provision of the inner courtyard allows for aconsiderable increase in natural light levels for the residents on all floorsand provides a secure external space for residents with dementia.

The annex building has been designed to respect the existinglisted building using a complementary historically based architectural designstyle. Some of the architectural features of the listed building, such as brick pediments, rendered columns and bay windows, have beenre-interpreted within the design of the annex building to provide connectionwithout replication.  The setting out andproportions of architectural features has been designed to respect the similarproportions of the listed building.

The use of mixtures of traditional materials such asbrickwork, rendered piers, timber windows and natural roof slates has been usedto further reflect and respect the architectural style of the existing buildingand also to provide suitable historic reference points.  All these materials can be found on thelisted building.
